London’s latest ascendant rapper Octavian has released a new track ‘Famous’ with Gunna and SAINt JHN. The predictable yet loveable psyche-trap track is everything you need from a tune produced by Jae5 – afrobeats, glimmering chimes, and understated melody. In a press release Octavian explained “The concept of ‘Fame’ should be connected to the celebration of one’s achievements; unfortunately, nowadays it is the glamorisation of unthought-about entertainment.”
The French born British rapper has an interesting perspective on his new found fame. Just a few years ago he was homeless. After getting ousted by his mother, he dropped out of high school before finishing. He spent the next several years homeless or couch-surfing. He was later denied public housing for not being considered a British citizen. He described it all in almost ambivalent terms to the Guardian: “That’s just how life works,” he shrugs. “There’s bare things that come with being poor. I didn’t have the money to be English, but I was English, I was raised here, I went to school here … then you have someone telling you you’re not English enough? I hated those authorities. When you’re young, it’s cool. I didn’t have no money, but I still managed to eat, to live … it wasn’t the worst thing in the world. Once you’re there, that is your life. You can only look up, because down there’s nothing left.”
This past June, Octavian collaborated with Future for “Rari (Chapter 1).” The tune will appear on Octavian’s debut album via Black Butter/RCA Records.
